Les quatre vélos was somewhat of a technical challenge to produce, not helped by a one week time frame. The original idea came from the fact that while fixie/messenger videos have become somewhat ubiquitous, the techniques of filming are often very similar. A crude wooden frame was constructed to position a low rpm (about 8) DC motor that would turn a lightweight camera attached via a custom built component allowing it to film in a constant 360° motion. This would allow filming of both the rider and their location, with the riders face coming into screen about every 8 to 15 seconds depending on supply voltage. 4 different people would be filmed while riding the bike in separate locations. By using a crude hand held green screen and a bit of flexibility (ducking out of shot every three rotations) they could be synced together in post production giving the impression of a continuous journey but with changing locations and riders.
Filming. The camera is mounted on a motor at the front of the bike. A green screen is used to cut between scenes.
